2. TOEFL® Institutional Testing Program (ITP) Assessment Series

The TOEFL® ITP is an easy to administer and cost-effective method for institutions to evaluate academic English language skills. It is the leading onsite testing program in the world, with more than 2,500 academic institutions administering more than 600,000 TOEFL® ITP tests each year. This test can be used to identify students' current levels of proficiency, to evaluate progress at the end of a course, for placement in a program of study, or for applying for some educational institutions and universities (usually those that do not conduct their degree programs in English).

The Difference between TOEFL® iBT and TOEFL® ITP

It is very important to understand the difference between the official TOEFL® iBT, which is used by institutions to make high-stakes decisions, such as whether or not to admit a student, and the TOEFL® ITP tests, which consist of content from previously administered TOEFL® paper-based tests and are most often used only for initial screening of applicants and with students who have already been admitted.

The TOEFL® ITP generally cannot be used as a substitute for the TOEFL® iBT test in applying for universities in English-speaking countries. If an institution requests a “TOEFL” score for admissions purposes without specifying which version, they usually are seeking a TOEFL iBT score; do not submit a TOEFL ITP score unless you can verify that it will be accepted.

TOEFL® ITP Sections Level 1:

TOEFL® ITP Sections Level 2:

Institutions are licensed to administer TOEFL® ITP tests to individuals or to groups. The time required for administration is approximately two hours for Level 1 (for intermediate to advanced English learners) and 1.5 hours for Level 2 (for high beginning to intermediate level learners).

3. TOEFL® Paper-based Test (PBT)

The TOEFL® PBT test, administered in a paper-based format, includes three sections; Listening Comprehension, Structure, and Written Expression and Reading Comprehension, in addition to a 30-minute writing test, called the TWE® test, which is required of everyone who takes the paper-based test. The total time to take both tests will be about four hours.

While TOEFL PBT is being phased out worldwide, there are occasional TOEFL® PBT sessions to be held in Saudi Arabia only for women. Some institutions and universities may still accept the TOEFL® PBT if the test was taken less than two years ago.
