Every year, there are students who want to go to countries where English language is used for communication to pursue further studies or, probably, for working. International English Language Testing System IELTS is a test conducted for students all over the world to test their command in the English Language. Conducted, as a joint venture, by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL). British Council and IDP Education Australia, IELTS is a mandatory test for all those who want to work in the above mentioned countries.

IELTS is accepted by over 130 countries, is offered 3-4 times a month and is conducted online as well as offline. According to IELTS 2015 exam syllabus and pattern, the test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete and consists of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

In Reading section, there are 3-4 passages of 700 words each, where students have to answer questions about main ideas, details, vocabulary, rhetorical purpose and overall ideas.

Listening section includes six passages of 3-4 minutes in length. In this section, there are passages that include two student conversations and four academic lectures or discussions. Each conversation is heard only once. Each conversation will be associated with five questions, whereas each lecture with six. Questions in this section will be asked to determine the main ideas, important details, speaker purpose and attitude.

Speaking: – Speaking section consists of six tasks: two independent tasks and four independent tasks. In independent tasks, candidate has to answer opinion questions on familiar tasks. Candidates are judged on their ability to speak spontaneously and clearly.

To prepare for IELTS, the following key points must be kept in mind:

  1. Start watching English movies, if you haven’t yet. It will improve your listening skills and would add phrases to your vocabulary.

  2. Always record keywords. If you come across a passage, make sure that you can identify keywords easily. This will require a lot of practice and reading.

  3. Once you’ve completed a lesson, always ask yourself a question at the end of it, “What have I learnt today?” Make notes of what you’ve learnt and you’ll realize that you will remember them for a far better duration of time.

  4. Make it a habit to read, and upon coming across an obscure word, do look for it in a dictionary and note down its meaning. Keep revising and you will have an enriched vocabulary sooner than you could have.

In fact, finding a free websites to prepare for the IELTS exam is not hard anymore. However, there is a problem that many of these sites only upload materials without considering if these resources are actual helpful. As a result, IELTS self-learners probably fall into material matrix and they are more likely to choose wrong materials.

For free tutorial:

I recommend you to visit ieltsliz or ielts-simon. They are good teachers and the ways they tackle the problems are very smart and easy to understand. Many of their tutorial videos are free but there are also premium videos that require you to pay for them. However, in general, I think the free videos are enough for your IELTS journey.

  8. While attempting the reading section, skip the questions you find hard. Answer all the easy ones first and then return to harder questions in case you have time.

  9. During the writing tasks, give an overview of the whole content. Examiners like it if they see a summary. Also, before you begin with writing, plan out the whole content. This will help you to write a more organized essay.
